1981 Pre-Season Power Rankings

The 1980 season saw the crowning of the New York Yankees as World Champions, but 1981 is a new year and teams have re-tooled - it's time for a new power ranking.

This list isn't about who would beat who, but more about who has the best playoff chances. Here are how I define my tiers:

S Tier: Clear favorites to make the playoffs. These teams either have a lack of opposition within their division or are stocked with talent (or both). For one of these teams to miss the playoffs they would have to have very unfortunate luck with injuries, an across-the-board talent decline, or another team in their division would have to have a miraculous season.

A Tier: Good playoff chances, but restricted by limited playoff spots and/or strong teams within their own division. Any of these teams making the playoffs would not be surprising and all are expected to be in the postseason hunt at various points throughout the season.

B Tier: These are talented teams, but they are restricted by strong divisions and tough wildcard races. One of these teams *could* make the jump into A tier, but it seems unlikely.

C Tier: Almost no playoff hopes here. These teams are rebuilding and hoping for the future.

D Tier: These teams aren't even trying to make the playoffs. They are stockpiling prospects and gearing up for the future.
